Love After 35, A Different Set of Rules

Love after the age of 35 often changes the way people approach relationships, dating, and expectations from a partner. People in their thirties and forties are usually more emotionally mature, have a clearer understanding of what they want, and are more likely to seek relationships that offer real quality and long-term potential.

Data shows that love after 35 is becoming increasingly common in both Europe and Croatia. Over the past decades, the age at which people enter serious relationships and marriage has shifted toward later stages of life.

Across Europe, there is a visible trend of entering marriage later. In many Western and Northern European countries, women marry for the first time after the age of 34, while men typically do so after the age of 36. At the same time, more than one-fifth of adults in Europe now live independently, and rising divorce rates in some countries are leading to a growing number of people re-entering the dating world later in life.

Croatia largely follows European trends, although it has some specific characteristics. The average age of entering a first marriage is around 31.7 for men and 29.3 for women. Nearly 47% of people do not live in a traditional family household. The average age of leaving the parental home is around 31.3, placing Croatia among the countries with the latest independence of young people in the European Union.

Why Love After 35 Is Often More Stable

At this stage of life, relationships often take on a different dimension, as people have a clearer understanding of what they want—and what they no longer want in a partnership. When choosing a partner, greater emphasis is placed on values, lifestyle, emotional maturity, and quality communication, and less on initial attraction or fleeting chemistry. As a result, relationships that begin at this stage often have greater potential for stability and long-term success.

Research also shows that emotional intelligence is becoming increasingly important in relationships. In one study, as many as 72% of respondents stated that emotional maturity attracts them more than physical attractiveness.

Slow Dating – A New Approach to Meeting People

The concept of so-called “slow dating” is becoming more common. It refers to a slower approach to meeting people, where greater emphasis is placed on conversation, values, and true compatibility.

On the other hand, modern dating also brings new challenges. The term “swipe fatigue” describes the sense of exhaustion many people experience due to dating apps, a large number of superficial interactions, and frequent ghosting.

However, more mature years also bring one important advantage: greater clarity about what people want in a relationship. At this stage of life, people usually know very well what they are looking for in a partnership—and what they are no longer willing to accept.

Matchmaking as a Higher-Quality Way of Meeting People

More and more people today are turning to matchmaking as a higher-quality way of meeting potential partners. Professional matchmakers connect people based on compatibility, values, and lifestyle, rather than superficial criteria that often dominate dating apps.

For many successful and busy individuals, this is a logical choice. Matchmaking saves time and offers a discreet, curated, and personalized approach to dating.

This idea is the foundation of INTRONIZED Croatia—a community that connects people who are ready for a serious relationship and a new chapter of love in more mature years.
